What is Pronation?

The pronation is referred to as the inward roll of the foot during normal motion. To have a pronation means that when the outer edge of the heel strikes the ground and the foot strikes inward and flattens out. There is a moderate amount of pronation for the foot to function properly, but there is a certain risk for damage and injury to occur while excessive pronation If a person has excessive pronation he will walk abnormally on the inner edge of the foot.

This will result in stressing and misalign the liagments, muscles and tendons of the foot, leg and sometimes even the back. Important to know is that this misalignment brings about muscular inefficiency, which will reduce speed and endurance when the person is walking or running. Remember that if you have any problems that are similar to those you must contact an orthopedist immediately, because if the pronation  is not treated, pronation will often lead to serious foot and lower body injuries.  Some of the injuries are flat feet, weak arches corns and frequent ankle sprains. Also if the pronation is not properly treated there is a risk of hip and body injuries, which are quite hard to cure and they involve a lot of pain. There a several ways that pronation if diagnosed may be trated. They are as follows orthopedic inserts, proper footwear and special exercises. Pronation is the normal foot motion and this word generally refers to action of your foot when you apply some weight through gait cycle. As foot strikes ground, starting from heel & rolling forward through an arch and on toes, specific series of the movements happens named pronation.

Essentially, heel and ankle will roll inward after heel strikes ground, and when weight is been transferred to mid foot, arch flattens out. Pronation is very normal; problem happens where there is the overpronation. When person overpronates, arch stays flat, and ankle rolls very far inward as toes start to push off. This places raised stress on muscles & ligaments of foot. The excess pronation generally causes over use type injuries, happening most frequently in the runners. When the neutral foot pronates at time of walking and running, lower leg, thigh and knee all rotate internally. When athlete with the overpronated foot runs, then this rotation action is exaggerated & gets more marked.
